Back in Atlanta, I used to ride a bus onto campus for work. Since the bus stop was on the way to Holden’s office, he would drop me off by 7:00am and then pick me up there in the afternoon around 5:15pm. Here in Texas, our remote work schedules are 7:00am to 4:00pm (8 to 5 for our Eastern time zone employers), but the lack of a commute has added roughly two hours of “personal time” to our weekdays. Since we’re loathe to wake up any earlier than necessary to get some coffee and a shower before logging in, those two bonus hours manifest themselves between the end of the work day and dinnertime.
Filling that time was easy when we were still unpacking. We could always find furniture to arrange, boxes to unpack, or pictures to hang. And we still have things to do, don’t get me wrong, but now they’re more like fine-tuning, and easier to push off to another day until inspiration strikes. Holden had been using that time to take walks, though the late afternoon hours in Texas have become inhospitable to the concept of enjoying the outdoors. Since it’s only going to get hotter, he signed up for membership in a nearby gym this week, to get his aerobic exercise in a much more comfortable environment.
I’ll be greeting him dressed as above from time to time, just so he remembers to leave a little energy in the tank for when he gets home… ~C
