Tethered to the landline in her hotel room, she was reminded of intimate chats from long ago. Conversations which were conducted entirely in a whisper, so as not to wake her parents in the bedroom next door. She smiled at the contrast: Carnal activities which in her youth were planned and executed in secret are now not only allowed, but blessed and encouraged. A knock at the door, one more hurried “I love you” to the man on the other end of the line, and a deep breath to steady herself. She pressed the speaker phone button before gently returning the handset to its cradle.

I saw an old photo recently of a woman in silk stockings with her feet up on a brass bed head whilst she spoke on the phone, and was pursuing it but now there is no need as you have given me the modern equivalent, and so beautiful it is too and so redolent of long absences and long phonecalls from hotel rooms. Beautiful, piquant, prompting old memories x
